Ticks

Paralysis ticks can kill pets. Treat the yard.

The east coast of NSW, including Lake Macquarie, Newcastle and the Hunter, is paralysis tick country. They live in long grass and bushy yards and can be deadly to pets and dangerous to humans (particularly young kids). A yard treatment dramatically reduces the population.

Ticks

Signs of infestation

  • Ticks on the dog or cat after a walk or yard play
  • Tick bites on yourself or family - small, dark, attached
  • Yards with bushland boundary or thick undergrowth
  • Pets staggering, breathing oddly or off their food (URGENT vet attention)
  • Long grass and leaf litter areas around the perimeter

How we treat ticks

  • Yard-wide residual treatment with focus on perimeter and undergrowth
  • Bushland-edge and grass treatment in high-risk areas
  • Repeat applications during peak tick season (spring to autumn)
  • Advice on personal and pet protection
  • Coordination with vet-recommended on-pet treatments

Prevention

  • Keep year-round tick protection on every pet (check with your vet)
  • Mow lawns short and clear leaf litter regularly
  • Wear long sleeves, long pants and closed shoes in bushland
  • Check pets and yourself thoroughly after time in the yard or bush
  • Remove ticks promptly with a freeze spray - don't try to pull them out
